OPEN GARDENS CONSTANTIA 2019 - with a difference

The traditional Constantia Open Gardens event is back with a focussed message:

‘It is possible to make beautiful and water-usage-responsible gardens in our drought-stricken times.’

The four gardens chosen for 2019 each represent a different way of being water-aware and as ecologically responsible as possible.

GARDENS ON SHOW

A small lawn-less garden with indigenous plants. There is also an exciting and innovative use of succulents including a beautiful vertical living wall structure which will be available to order. The garden is watered solely from a basic grey-water system and rain collection tanks. Towards the end of summer everything has to survive on very little moisture – and does! There is an active bee-hive in this garden to add to its eco-friendly interest.

A medium-sized leafy, shady, garden which initially survived on collected tank water but now enjoys limited bore-hole watering. This garden is of interest because of the soothing and attractive shade plantings as well as an abundant vegetable area. This will be the home of our ever-popular and attractively priced plant-sale.

A larger, formal garden with planting cleverly organised to suit water needs. There are neat clipped hedges to give an orderly look and an interesting integration of indigenous and exotic plants. Served at this venue and included in the Open Gardens ticket is delicious Barista coffee, tea and homemade eats.

A large, modern, geometrically designed garden designed to take advantage of the stunning view of the back of Table Mountain. The planting is mainly indigenous and incorporates beautiful decking, a juvenile forest, a productive veggie garden and an ingenious children’s play area.
